The Auger Attachment for the Skid Steer Loader
By: Dave Cole
It is necessary that your Skid Steer Loader have Hydraulics in
order to operate an auger attachment. You can get an auger
attachment for a Skid Steer Loader from companies like Lowe,
McMillen, New Holland or Shaver.
An auger attachment on a Skid Steer Loader is designed to move
material and liquids upward along the shaft of the attachment. It
does this by means of a metal curve that projects from the
surface of the shaft, cut at an angle to drive material up much
like a very big screw.
The auger then is lowered and spun into the material or liquid
and the deeper the auger goes the more material or liquid is
pushed up and out of the way of the hole the auger is drilling.
After the auger is lifted out of the way of the hole usually all
that is left in place is the hole itself and all the material or
liquid outlines the area. The auger attachment is great for
digging post holes.
The main use of an auger on a Skid Steer Loader is to move earth
and soil out of the way so that posts can be put in for
foundational purposes. However this is not the cleanest way to
dig holes for often the dirt or material you are moving ends up
being deposited around the hole that was dug by the auger.
The purpose of using an auger attachment for your skid steer
loader is that it can dig fast, even holes that are dug
efficiently and quickly. There are many more uses for an auger
itself but on a skid steer loader digging into soil and earth is
the main use.
For agricultural purposes augers have been used to move harvested
crops from the trucks to the storage bins. They have also been
used to move crops that are not threshed yet into a mechanism to
thresh them, and to move grain around and in and out of the
hopper machine.
Augers are very useful and on a skid steer loader, which is
compact and easy to maneuver, they make jobs that were once hard
tasks easier and more exact. You can buy this attachment for the
skid steer loader for from $200 to $2,500 depending upon the size
of the auger you need.
